It’s not quite as terrible as the lowest possible rating implies. I understand the relocation from Chicago to New Orleans; it's a familiar journey, similar to starting in Memphis and following the Delta Blues Trail through places associated with W.C. Handy and Robert Johnson. The film appears to be aiming for a tribute to the blues tradition, but it doesn’t feel like the same kind of humorous celebration of the music that the first one did. Naturally, John is no longer with us, and even though this feels like Dan Aykroyd's personal project, having someone else take his place just doesn't quite work—Goodman or anyone else. However, Koko has replaced Franklin, which I appreciate since I’ve always preferred her. Her appearance was definitely a highlight. It still misses some of the legendary blues musicians who were around back then – Buddy Guy, Magic Slim, Fats Domino – and instead features B.B. King, who is good in his own way but doesn't replicate the original cast. Ultimately, what probably started as an homage ended up feeling more like a sequel, and one that should have come out twenty years ago.
