The movie presents a compact and detailed murder mystery set against the backdrop of Paris, focusing on the deaths of several young women. Simultaneously, an unusual figure known as "Gaston" (played by John Carradine) crosses paths with "Lucille" (Jean Parker). Gaston's attention toward Lucille sparks jealousy from his occasional companion, "Renee" (Sonia Sorel), while another member of their group, "Francine" (Teala Loring), is involved with investigating officer "Lefebre" (Nils Asther). It’s evident that the production wasn't lavish – in fact, resources appeared limited – yet director Edgar Ulmer elicited a respectable performance from Carradine as the story unfolds in a manner that feels somewhat foreseeable, but still holds your attention. The narrative includes some unexpected turns to keep viewers interested, and the three female characters perform adequately when given worthwhile lines. Unfortunately, such opportunities aren't frequent enough. Despite this, the film’s distinctive visual style and atmosphere, leaning toward gothic horror, make it reasonably enjoyable. While I doubt I’ll recall having seen it even a couple of weeks from now, I did appreciate watching it for about 70 minutes.
