This western feels pretty unremarkable, though Gabby Hayes’ portrayal of the sheriff does provide some entertainment. The sheriff notices someone acting strangely (John Wayne) close to the money storage and, after finding out the payroll is missing, begins following him as a suspect. The story gains momentum when he realizes the situation isn't straightforward and they end up working together; it turns out a prominent figure in town is stealing supplies with the intention of forcing other landowners into financial ruin so he can purchase their land cheaply. It’s clear this was made on a very limited budget, and the script itself isn't particularly strong. Like many older, low-budget westerns, the single camera work holds it back considerably. The film moves along fairly quickly for about half its length, but still feels slow at times.
