"Jean" (played by Rosy McEwan) works as a physical education teacher in a school located in Northern England. She’s also involved in a secret relationship with "Viv" (Kerrie Hayes), though his girlfriend has difficulty understanding the need for secrecy. The situation becomes more tangled when "Lois" (Lucy Halliday) enrolls in Jean's netball class and they happen to meet again at a bar. What follows shows a brief look into Jean’s difficult life as her students begin to piece things together, leading to trouble. As someone who experienced that era firsthand, I must say I am weary of films portraying "Thatcher" as some sort of otherworldly being sent to reform society. The policies enacted by her government reflected the anxieties of many people in Britain—across the political landscape—who feared the negative impact on children stemming from what they perceived as overly lenient attitudes. Instead of recognizing these worries as valid at that time and providing a broader historical perspective, this film seems primarily focused on two individuals whose relationship doesn't feel particularly convincing, attempting to make a larger political statement. A sense of equilibrium is vital for such an endeavor. The core issues explored have potential, but they aren’t fleshed out sufficiently to create fully realized characters; instead, the movie offers a rather superficial critique of a system that was, at one point, fairly representative—something I am thankful has changed. The production values are somewhat rudimentary, and while McEwan delivers a thoughtful performance, I had hoped for something more substantial in terms of depth and impact.
