It took me quite some time to figure out that Angela Lansbury, who was only 35 at the time, was portraying Elvis’s mother – he himself being 25. It's a case of necessary creative liberties in what is otherwise a very artificial romantic comedy that doesn’t really benefit anyone involved. Having recently come back from Germany, "Chad" finds himself unsure of his next step. He isn't interested in working in the family's fruit business and would rather collaborate with his girlfriend "Maile" (Joan Blackman), which upsets his mother considerably. Sorry, Mom. “Maile” works as a tour guide, showcasing Hawaii’s lovely scenery. This is when he meets the young "Ellie" (Jenny Maxwell) who develops an interest in him, leading to chaos involving her teacher "Abigail" (Nancy Walters) and even some fighting with nearly everyone on the island. He's certainly someone you can watch because of his charm, but he’s not a convincing actor. His versions of “Blue Hawaii” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love” make it obvious that he struggles to lip-sync. Lansbury seems to be enjoying herself with a high-pitched accent, but everything else feels stiff and unnatural; I even noticed what appeared to be repeating background photography, and it's clear you need to change chords when playing the ukulele. It seems Elvis’s schedule didn’t permit Norman Taurog much opportunity to refine what is basically a pleasant film designed to showcase the star, but this is fairly typical and unexceptional work from everyone involved.
