It took me quite some time to figure out that Angela Lansbury, who was 35 at the time, was portraying Elvis's mother—he himself being only 25—in this movie! It’s a romantic comedy that feels very artificial, taking considerable liberties with reality and ultimately not benefiting anyone involved. After returning from Germany, “Chad” finds himself unsure of his next move. He has no interest in participating in the family fruit business; he'd rather work alongside his girlfriend "Maile" (Joan Blackman), which displeases his mother. Sorry, Mom. "Maile" works as a tour guide, showcasing Hawaii’s scenic beauty. That's when he meets “Ellie” (Jenny Maxwell), a young girl who develops an interest in him, leading to chaos involving her teacher "Abigail" (Nancy Walters) and even some fights with practically everyone on the island. He certainly has a certain charm, but he isn’t a convincing actor. His performances of songs like "Blue Hawaii" and "Can't Help Falling in Love" make it obvious that he struggles with lip-syncing. Lansbury seems to be enjoying herself with a peculiar accent, however, the rest of the production feels stiff and unrealistic—I even suspect some of the background scenery was simply repeating, and I’m aware that you need to change chords when playing a ukulele. It appears the star's schedule didn't permit director Norman Taurog much opportunity to refine what is essentially just a pleasant film designed to showcase the performer, but it’s all rather ordinary and uninspired work from everyone involved.
