It’s hard not to wonder if "Blue Beetle" would have been better off simply taking its name from that persistent, pointless fly that keeps appearing. Susan Sarandon appears as “Kord,” the power-hungry corporate leader attempting to engineer a super-soldier—dubbed "OMAC"—through an alien scarab capable of bonding a person with a nearly unbreakable internal structure. Luckily for everyone involved, Kord's housekeeper enjoys using her luxurious bathroom, and when discovered, she and her brother unexpectedly lose their jobs and meet “Jenny” (Bruna Marquezine), the headstrong niece of their antagonist, who is set on preventing the militarization of her father’s business. She manages to steal the device from their headquarters and hands it over to the rather earnest and somewhat naive brother "Jaime" (Xolo Maridueña), with a firm warning not to open the package. Naturally, they ignore this instruction, and soon Jaime and the glowing blue artifact become inseparable—granting him flight, incredible speed, and superhuman strength. Kord is desperate to retrieve it, so she enhances her already partially mechanized enforcer "Carapax" (Raoul Max Trujillo), leading to a predictable climax that could be foreseen from miles away. The entire production feels like a typical made-for-TV movie. While the visual effects are impressive, spectacular firework displays, splitting a bus in half, and constant explosions aren’t enough anymore; a film needs some level of originality. Aside from its bilingual nature, there's very little fresh or inventive about it. The characters are mostly unremarkable—particularly the irritating uncle "Rudy" (George Lopez), whose unbelievable skill with advanced technology seemed ridiculous! It also runs far too long, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that a sequel was being set up, which felt disappointing. This is a flimsy narrative featuring an unmemorable cast seemingly intended to cater to the growing Hispanic market in the United States. Whether it will resonate there is questionable; I'm not convinced anyone else needs this.
