A couple of friends suggested I watch this film, noting its Maine setting, which is where I live. While they seemed to enjoy it considerably, I didn’t find it quite as captivating, and I only completed it due to their recommendation and that connection to my home state. As someone who writes novels, I tend to pay close attention to plot construction, and I encountered issues almost from the start. It felt jarring that two police officers actively investigating a crime in a small town would simultaneously ignore a long-standing house of prostitution. There's an intentional obscurity throughout; veiled warnings, allusions to past events, motivations are suggested but never fully explained. The effect is similar to listening to a Bob Dylan song—the omission of details can be revealing—but it’s more effective in a short musical piece than in a ninety-minute movie. It seemed like relatively minor adjustments could have significantly enhanced the film's quality. If you want something atmospheric to provide background entertainment while doing chores, browsing online, or texting, this might hold your interest. However, if you intend to focus on it and analyze its narrative structure, you may be disappointed.
