This Brian De Palma crime mystery, featuring John Travolta and John Lithgow, presents a vibrant look at events unfolding in Philadelphia. The story centers on a sound effects technician who discovers that what appeared to be an accident involving the governor was something else entirely, pulling him into a dangerous situation with some questionable individuals. Dennis Franz and Nancy Allen also appear as part of this shadowy scheme. "Blow Out," released in 1981, is a crime drama/thriller distinguished by its striking colors, visual style, strong cast, and the use of Philadelphia settings—all contributing to an enjoyable experience. Comparisons can be drawn with Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation,” but this film feels more energetic. Nancy Allen's portrayal of a somewhat flighty character is charming, while Travolta delivers a performance at his best. Lithgow also makes a convincing presence as someone involved in something illicit. I particularly enjoyed the vividly colored and well-constructed scene beneath the Henry Avenue Bridge; however, I found myself losing some enthusiasm during the latter portion of the film, as the plot seemed to become increasingly artificial. Despite this, it's considered a good movie by many reviewers. The runtime is approximately one hour and forty-eight minutes, and filming took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with additional work completed in New York City and Burbank, California.
