Given that it’s centered on upscale hairstyling, it strikes me as peculiar that Josh Hartnett’s haircut appears amateurish. The story of this gentle comedy unfolds in a northern English community preparing to hold the National Hairdressing Championships. A talented group of familiar British actors—Warren Clarke, Natasha Richardson, and Alan Rickman—contribute to the constant stream of rivalries, romantic interests, and witty remarks about hairstyles. What makes the film stand out is how it questions stereotypes, both regarding the profession itself and the perspectives of people in working-class England, as much as any individual performance does; this element helps maintain the humor’s momentum. The script certainly isn't destined for literary acclaim, and the acting won't be recognized by BAFTA, but there’s a certain charm to the film, and the characters readily mock themselves, award shows in general, and even Bill Nighy, who usually seems stiff, delivers a good performance alongside the somewhat sparingly featured Hollywood celebrity who genuinely appeared to be having fun.
