Wuchak on Bloody New Year

4/10 · Apr 19, 2022

A group of young people from Wales spend a day having fun with carnival games and sailing, but their plans are disrupted when they’re compelled to land on an island where unsettling occurrences start taking place. "Bloody New Year," made in 1987, borrows the fundamental storyline of "Out of Control" (from 1984) and incorporates elements reminiscent of “Funhouse” (1981), along with nods to “Carnival of Souls” (1962) and “The Evil Dead” (1981). It’s notable as a Welsh independent film, offering a glimpse into ordinary life in Wales, and it's visually vibrant. What prevents the movie from being truly effective is that the characters lack depth, so you don't become invested in their fates as they try to escape one strange incident after another. “Out of Control” succeeded because its creators made an effort to develop the personalities of the characters and include realistic slices of life. Despite this shortcoming, there are some positives. Mark Powley is a compelling lead actor, and Nikki Brooks delivers a strong performance. Catherine Roman appears as well, resembling a younger Debra Winger, though she’s generally less impressive overall. The film has a running time of one hour and thirty minutes and was filmed on Barry Island and the neighboring Penarth in Wales. GRADE: C/C- (4.5/10)
