Bloody Mama is a film by Roger Corman, scripted by Don Peters and Robert Thom. The cast includes Shelley Winters, Bruce Dern, Don Stroud, Robert De Niro, Diane Varsi, Robert Walden, and Pat Hingle. Music comes from Don Randi, and John A. Alonzo handled the cinematography. The narrative draws inspiration from the notorious Kate "Ma" Barker and her sons, a group known for their criminal activities. “I told my boys to just rob banks and stay out of trouble.” Bloody Mama feels like an offbeat offspring of Bonnie and Clyde, with Roger Corman at his most inventive. He delivers violence that is surprisingly impactful, but the film also maintains a sense of theatricality. The characters are a collection of extremes: a mother figure obsessed with death, a psychopath, a sadist, someone who seems to be submissive toward other men, a drug user who enjoys inflicting pain, and an unfortunate girlfriend. It’s no surprise that there's murder, robbery, and questionable sexual encounters happening! The film even starts with incestuous rape. It can feel disorganized at times, largely due to Winters’ over-the-top performance, but just as things seem about to spiral completely out of control, Corman and the actors manage to regain some semblance of direction. It's frequently exciting and disturbing; Corman incorporates newsreel footage from that period alongside filming on location in Arkansas, giving the story a raw, documentary feel—though it’s not particularly accurate historically. It won’t appeal to everyone, but from its unsettling beginning to the explosive ending, Bloody Mama commands attention with a mischievous energy. 7.5/10
