“Bloodshot,” easily among the least impressive films released this year, manages to misuse every potential strength it possesses. Adapted from the popular sci-fi comic book series, the movie centers on Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel), a soldier who is killed and then revived as a super-assassin. Nanotechnology courses through Ray’s body, granting him incredible strength, invulnerability, and the ability to instantly recover from any injuries he receives during fighting. As his memories become unreliable and blur the lines between what's real and fabricated, Ray begins to suspect that lead scientist Dr. Harting (Guy Pearce) has ulterior motives—and he uses all of his enhanced abilities to try and thwart him. The movie doesn’t contain enough substance for a full-length feature; it feels like the narrative was artificially extended from the beginning. The storyline is farfetched but initially intriguing, yet its most promising aspects are discarded hastily. It seemed as though the film could have gone in one of two directions, and it opted for the more disappointing choice, leaving it stuck somewhere undefined. It’s neither clever enough nor silly enough to be entertaining. Whenever director Dave Wilson senses a lack of momentum, he inserts an obvious explosion or crude joke to try and keep things going—and that's just how low the quality goes. Even the action sequences suffer from editing that is too fast-paced, seemingly intended to conceal the fact that it’s a bloodless PG-13 movie. There’s a nearly enjoyable extended fight scene set in elevators and a skyscraper, but this appears late in the film when most viewers will likely have already lost interest. What's even more frustrating is that there are no real stakes because Ray cannot be harmed or killed, and the special effects appear to have been hastily assembled by a young teenager using a home computer. Diesel isn’t a particularly gifted actor, but that hasn’t historically been necessary for portraying a charismatic action hero on screen. He's generally an acceptable choice for an action star, though his performance here is unintentionally comical, especially when he shares scenes with the more skilled Pearce. This movie is complete garbage and will likely disappear quickly from theaters. I urge viewers: help to end “Bloodshot’s” run by ignoring it.
