Coming back from a heart transplant, a former FBI profiler—Clint Eastwood—finds himself working as a private investigator because of a connection to one of the victims. Jeff Daniels is on hand as his funny neighbor, who lives near the docks, and Wanda De Jesus shows up as a possible romantic interest. “Blood Work,” released in 2002, was adapted from a Michael Connelly book and features his character, Terry McCaleb, but it feels like Dirty Harry’s final assignment after he's left the force, similar to how “Gran Torino” felt like "Dirty Harry" during its heyday. Eastwood was 71 years old when they filmed this, yet his character is around eight years younger and he manages to make it believable. I mention that just to highlight the fact that this isn’t the same energetic Dirty Harry we know. This is a detective who's older, retired, and recovering, and dealing with what seems like his last case. A good deal of the dialogue focuses on how old and worn down he feels. So, while it shares qualities with a gritty urban detective story like “Dirty Harry,” this one’s much calmer and more serious. It’s more dramatic than gripping. If you're okay with that shift in tone, it’s an alright detective movie. It seems fairly authentic until the ending, which has a surprise I didn’t anticipate—though some people apparently did. The final scenes feel forced and like something out of a standard Hollywood production. “A Simple Plan” (1998) did something similar: a story that felt real until it took an unbelievable turn at the very end. The movie is 1 hour, 50 minutes long and was filmed in Los Angeles. Anjelica Huston plays a doctor, and Paul Rodriguez appears as a grumpy Hispanic detective. GRADE: C+/B-
