It takes considerable skill to successfully challenge a genre that relies on well-worn tropes; the initial presentation has to appear standard, but if it’s overly predictable, viewers might lose interest before anything unexpected happens. While the departments responsible for makeup, prosthetics, and special effects delivered reasonably good work—though nothing particularly new—the slow speed of the narrative and absence of genuine originality ultimately make 'Blood Vessel' a letdown. The title is pretty great, though. - Jake Watt
