It’s easy to find a companion like this for seventy-five dollars a month without any hassle. Robert Wise directed Blood on the Moon, which was based on a Luke Short story written by Lillie Hayward and Harold Shumante. The cast includes Robert Mitchum, Barbara Bel Geddes, Robert Preston, Walter Brennan, Phyllis Thaxter, Frank Faylen, Tom Tully, and Charles McGraw. Roy Webb composed the music, and Nicholas Musuraca handled the cinematography. The narrative centers on Mitchum as drifting cowboy Jim Garry, who gets caught in a dispute between ranchers and settlers after receiving a job offer from an old friend, Tate Riling (Preston). This Western is skillfully made and moves along well, earning praise for its departure from typical genre conventions and the film noir elements introduced by Musuraca. Mitchum delivers one of his most compelling performances, propelling the story forward through explorations of deception, divided allegiances, and ethical dilemmas. Director Wise maintains a good rhythm throughout the movie, allowing it to unfold deliberately while focusing on Jim Garry's perspective; the action is further enhanced by an impressive fistfight and a chaotic shootout at the film’s conclusion. However, the atmosphere created by Musuraca and Wise stands out as particularly noteworthy. Given that the story takes place almost entirely at night or in dimly lit spaces, shadows are prominent, contributing to a heavy feeling that underscores the psychological tension within the plot. Geddes portrays a spirited cowgirl alongside Mitchum, while Brennan, Faylen, and McGraw’s distinctive voices leave a lasting impression. It's an engaging story with strong performances and striking visuals. 7/10
