Wuchak on Blood Harvest

6/10 · Jun 30, 2022

A young woman, Itonia Salchek, goes back to her hometown in northern Wisconsin and discovers that her parents have vanished, and the locals aren’t welcoming because her father previously worked for a bank foreclosing on farms. Her former boyfriend attempts to assist her while his brother has become erratic dealing with what happened to their family. Peter Krause appears as the woman's fiancé in his first acting role. "Blood Harvest," made in 1987, is a low-budget slasher film created by Wisconsin filmmaker Bill Rebane. He encountered Tiny Tim performing at a beer carnival in Lincoln County, and this movie was the result. It’s remarkable that it was filmed within a single day and night given how technically proficient it is, considering its limitations. The main drawback is a sense of emptiness to the deliberately paced story. By "emptiness," I mean most of the action happens at or around the farmhouse and barn, with just a few scenes set in town—the diner, police station, and a church. It’s fair to say that “Friday the 13th Part III” (1982) and “Night of the Living Dead” (1968) used similar settings, and they aren't usually criticized for it. This feeling is intensified because there are only three or four primary characters—the ones mentioned earlier—along with two supporting players: the entertaining Sheriff (Frank Benson) and the girl’s friend, Sarah (Lori Minnetti). The director devoted a significant portion of the film to showcasing Itonia Salchek's distinctive beauty. There is some nudity included, so viewers who are sensitive to that should be aware. This was her only acting appearance. Tiny Tim’s clown-like character is compelling because he reminds me of someone I know personally. Large men often have a natural innocence about them, but there’s also an underlying feeling that they could be dangerous. It's like Lennie from "Of Mice and Men." They use silliness or odd behavior to cope with difficult circumstances. Ultimately, this is a simple slasher film made with very little money, but it’s done well artistically. Appreciate it for what it is. The movie has a running time of one hour and twenty-eight minutes and was filmed in Gleason, Wisconsin, as well as nearby Irma and Merrill, all located in north-central Wisconsin. GRADE: B-/B
