Joel Schumacher’s movie combines Viking symbols found in America with Nazis interested in dark magic who consume blood, attempting to develop a third eye to gain superhuman abilities. A beginning sequence taking place in the 1930s shows Nazi historian Richard Wirth (Michael Fassbender) going to a Virginia farm to examine ancient Viking runes; his intention is to harness the stones’ power for himself, and the German family owning the property becomes unwilling participants over many years. Now, Evan Marshall (Henry Cavill), working as a paramedic, unexpectedly encounters his brother Victor (Dominic Purcell), who was previously missing and thought to be dead. Victor recounts an unbelievable story about being held prisoner on a farm, from which he escaped, and now wants to go back and eliminate everyone there. Evan discovers an eternal family living on the property, claiming they are victims of terror, and finds Wirth in the basement, requiring blood to change his form. Schumacher has created a quickly moving horror film made cheaply, featuring performers who seem like they should be in something bigger. Even a zombie horse makes an appearance; the story is difficult to follow except for the fact that Wirth arranged Victor’s escape to finish his transformation in this violent movie.
