John Chard on Blood and Wine

6/10 · Jul 18, 2020

The idea of loyalty among criminals is just made up—it doesn’t exist. Blood and Wine credits Bob Rafelson as director, who also collaborated with Nick Villiers and Alison Cross on the script. The cast includes Jack Nicholson, Stephen Dorff, Jennifer Lopez, Judy Davis, and Michael Caine. Michal Lorenc composed the music, and Newton Thomas Sigel was in charge of cinematography. A man struggling with his family life gets involved with a shady character to steal a valuable necklace. However, when his wife and son become entangled in this scheme, events quickly get out of hand. Rafelson revisits Nicholson’s talent for another neo-noir project. Like the remakes of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "Black Widow," this one promises more than it delivers. There's nothing inherently wrong with the performances or the story itself; Nicholson and Caine have a great dynamic together, while Lopez and Dorff add some appeal in their smaller roles. The film has that classic noir feel, full of unpleasant people, and you can see how fate works in this kind of world. But it develops more into an examination of personalities rather than something exciting or groundbreaking, like a good bottle of wine that’s been spoiled. Despite the interesting layers within the story and the quality acting, it's not essential viewing for fans of noir films. 6/10
