Reno on Blood and Ties

7/10 · Sep 1, 2016

It’s another try at uncovering what really happened! Korean thrillers are my go-to when I'm looking for something to enjoy. This one comes from a new director, but the presence of two familiar actors caught my attention. 'The Classic' and 'The Last Blossom' rank among my favorites, and seeing them paired up in this different kind of story was intriguing. The plot itself seemed good, but there’s a sense that something is missing—that electric feeling you expect isn’t quite there. There are definitely some tense moments, though they don’t measure up to other Korean thrillers I've seen. The movie centers on Da Eun, a young woman contentedly living with her father. Things really get going when she attends a screening of a film based on actual events and begins to have questions. As an aspiring journalist, she starts investigating as the deadline for resolving the case approaches. The rest of the story follows what she discovers and how it changes her life, building momentum until the very end. I mentioned that the premise was strong, but it could have been developed further. Even if it doesn’t completely win over viewers, it's well-made with great acting. It falls short in fleshing out a crucial event—the foundation of all the mysteries and intended to be a surprising reveal. The ending felt somewhat predictable, though it provided a satisfactory resolution; it's not a bad film overall, especially considering what others have said. It’s worth seeing once, but likely won’t stick with you for long. 6.5/10
