This film proved to be a genuine letdown. It presents a slow-paced, cold, and fragmented view of what Marilyn Monroe's life might have been like, feeling almost like a series of disconnected events. Initially, I honestly couldn’t tell if Ana de Armas resembled Lady Gaga or Scarlett Johansson – either of whom, in my opinion, could have delivered a stronger performance – because her portrayal, while intense, felt strangely detached. The film progresses through different phases of her life, hampered by some pretty weak and uninspired lines and intrusive music that contributes to an increasingly superficial and underwhelming experience. While the cinematography attempts to create a sense of closeness, the overall presentation is so stylized and artificial that it’s often hard to discern whether she's meant to be seen as a genuine person. Her marriages are glossed over quickly – and her connection with JFK is simplified into something rather unbelievable and unpleasant, failing to explain how their relationship developed. The film lacks heart. Beyond her obvious beauty – which wasn't particularly unique even at the time – we aren’t really given insight into the complexities of her personality; there’s a lot left for the audience to assume regarding how she became such a star and how she descended into a cycle of alcohol and medication. The movie depends heavily on the viewer already knowing about, and feeling fondness for, this imperfect woman. Adrien Brody and Bobby Cannavale aren't given much opportunity to contribute as her husbands, and the speculative relationship between her and Charlie Chaplin Jr (Xavier Samuel) and his ambiguously sexual friend Edward G Robinson Jr (Scoot McNairy) hints at the extravagant and dissolute lifestyles some people led in Hollywood, but their characters also feel underdeveloped, leaving us largely relying on our own imaginations. It runs far too long; I could see audience members glancing at the ceiling during the screening. It’s certainly watchable, but it represents a significant chance missed to provide something captivating and intriguing about this most recognizable of women.
