This is assuredly among Marlene Dietrich’s more affecting and forceful portrayals—though it avoids sentimentality—as a woman balancing roles as both wife and mother when her husband (Herbert Marshall) contracts Radium poisoning. As medical expenses for his care in Germany escalate, she resumes her career as a cabaret singer and finds herself drawn to the wealthy "Nick Townsend" played by Cary Grant. Marshall is distressed to learn of her unfaithfulness, leading to a pursuit where she and her child attempt to remain elusive, staying ahead of both him and law enforcement. The main actors give noteworthy performances, and it's hard to imagine anyone forgetting “Hot Voodoo,” especially in the gorilla costume. Dickie Moore, as the son, is charming and, even though his part is brief, he adds meaningfully to the later conflicts within the story. Apparently, the film ran into issues with censors, but what remains works well under Von Sternberg’s capable, if understated, guidance.
