During the period when Nazi Germany was bombing London, a mother named Rita (Saoirse Ronan) faced a tough choice: send her son George (Elliott Heffernan) away from their home. Her father wasn’t happy about it, so George disembarked a train and attempted to return on his own through a city filled with both helpful individuals and characters reminiscent of Dickens novels. As he made his way, Rita learned he'd left and while working in a munitions factory, she tried to find him. I felt that Heffernan gave a notably good performance, as did Kathy Burke during her short appearances; however, the film has an odd detachment about it. The story takes place against a backdrop of war’s unpredictable violence, and the narration reminds us that prejudice was always present just beneath the surface, but it doesn't come across as genuine or believable. It's obvious Apple invested in this project, but the characters feel underdeveloped, and there's a sense that the plot unfolds because it’s convenient rather than true to life, which diminishes the story’s emotional impact. This isn't helped by Ronan who seemed to be simply going through the motions, delivering a performance that felt like something you’d see in television shows from three decades ago. Dickinson has very little screen time, and while everything is perfectly acceptable to watch, it’s not particularly memorable except for a young actor who provides us with a child's perspective on cruelty and inhumanity.
