Steve McQueen's _Blitz_ is a captivating film that paints a striking picture of life in wartime London. The movie questions the popular idea that Londoners faced the dangers of the Blitz with unwavering optimism and togetherness. Instead, it highlights the complicated aspects of a city already known for its variety, showing how this diversity fostered cultural strength. Specifically, the East End—a place where people sought safety from persecution—is presented not just as a scene of hardship but as a strong, diverse community that truly represents London during wartime. This rejection of the idealized "keep calm and carry on" story is important because it connects the film to a more inclusive historical perspective. However, _Blitz_ sometimes feels weighed down by its scope. The movie tries to cover many different stories and side plots, which makes it hard to give each one proper attention. One storyline that doesn't quite work as well involves an Underground station flooding after a bomb—a scene famously shown in _Atonement_, at the actual location of Balham. Moving this event to London Bridge increases the sense that it’s made up. Some viewers might leave thinking this tragedy, which resulted in 68 deaths, didn't even occur as McQueen presents it; although his depiction is interesting, it doesn’t have the same effect as _Atonement_, which also featured Saoirse Ronan. McQueen touches on differences in living conditions during air raids, for example by mentioning the Stepney Communist Party, which advocated for equal access to safe shelters. But a key event that could have emphasized this conflict—the Party's dramatic takeover of the Savoy Hotel to protest unequal shelter access—is left out. This moment, where working-class East Enders stormed a fancy West End hotel, pressured the government into allowing Tube stations to be used as public shelters. Even with these shortcomings in the storytelling, _Blitz_ is still an impressive and powerful depiction of London during its most difficult period. It provides a realistic, complex view that changes how we understand wartime resilience and unity, allowing viewers to truly feel the weight of what happened.
