It’s hard to fault a film pairing David Lean directing Noël Coward, centering on Rex Harrison ("Charles") and his interactions with three women—two of whom became his wives, Constance Cummings ("Ruth") and Kay Hammond ("Elvira"), while the third is responsible for most of his problems, spiritualist Margaret Rutherford ("Madama Arcati"). The dialogue moves along at a clever and absorbing speed from the very beginning. Harrison, who sometimes delivers performances that feel stiff, seems entirely comfortable in this supernatural situation; a séance held at his home, overseen by the eccentric Rutherford, brings his former wife "Elvira" back into existence—a presence visible only to him—and she sets about creating as much trouble as possible for her ex-husband and his current spouse "Ruth." The story’s focus keeps the number of characters limited, and there's a constant flow of events that provide both amusement and insight into the complexities of marital “bliss.” It feels like an ideal scenario—though more of a torment for Rex!
