I had absolutely no idea what to expect going into this movie, and about twenty minutes after leaving the theater, while riding the train home, I realized watching it wasn’t a good idea for a public commute—the person next to me seemed pretty convinced I was strange. Honestly, aside from that, the film is pretentious, visually appealing, but filled with awful dialogue and gratuitous profanity seemingly intended to make it appear edgy. There were numerous opportunities for the main character to be nude, which isn’t inherently bad, but after a while—maybe around the sixth or seventh instance—it just doesn't have the same effect. My biggest issue is that this film was made by people who seem completely unfamiliar with drugs, their appearance, or methods of consumption. I really wanted to appreciate the director’s vision, but between this and *VFW*, I’m not connecting with his work; on paper, it should be exactly what I enjoy, but it prioritizes style over substance.
