This movie has serious problems. "Frida" (Naomi Ackie) and her friend "Jess" (Alia Shawkat) are employed by caterers at an extravagant party thrown by wealthy man "Slater" (Channing Tatum). During the event, they change into nicer clothes and join the festivities. A chance encounter introduces "Frida" to their host, and after a few drinks, the two become very close. His assistant, "Vic" (Christian Slater), wants to go somewhere warm with a cocktail umbrella, so they happily accept an invitation from their new acquaintance to visit his island retreat, where he and several other friends will enjoy sunshine, expensive meals, and plenty of drugs. There’s something unsettling about the otherwise perfect estate—an elderly woman (María Elena Olivares) who seems occupied with collecting beautiful yellow snakes that wander around freely but whose venom could be harmful. It's only when "Jess" is bitten that her friend starts to question what's really happening. The situation feels excessively pleasant, and when the old lady gives her a drink from an unlabeled container—well, things begin to shift, revealing a darker truth not just for her, but for all the women living in a state of blissful ignorance fueled by drugs. It has elements of Agatha Christie combined with "Glass Onion"—it's fairly captivating for roughly the first half hour, but the story becomes too unbelievable once it gains momentum. The film certainly touches on vanity and people’s willingness to accept things that seem too good to be true, however, as the story moves toward its ending, there's a significant flaw in the basic idea that even the frequent appearances of his consistently scatterbrained assistant "Stacy" (Geena Davis) can't fix. It is visually appealing, but the acting and dialogue are forgettable, and while I appreciated the irony of the final outcome, the plot just isn’t substantial enough to get us there. This feels like typical summer entertainment attempting to blend comedy with suspense, but ultimately seems more like a justification for Tatum, Slater, and company to enjoy some time in the sun.
