It seems the McGregors figured a road trip with a father and daughter was exactly what audiences were looking for, so Ewan and Clara went ahead and created this pretty forgettable and slow-moving drama. It becomes clear early on that their relationship is difficult, and he’s trying to reconnect with his daughter who recently left the emergency room. Naturally, all the specifics of that situation come out, along with the expected collection of predictable family issues as the story progresses. Fortunately (for those watching), their truck breaks down, giving us a chance to meet the amusing tow-truck driver (Kim Zimmer – easily the best part of the whole thing). Once the vehicle is repaired, the daughter takes some drinks with "Kip" (Jake Weary) before her father intervenes and they continue on. She tends to need frequent bathroom breaks, and during one such stop, she unknowingly comes into contact with a spider that leaves an unpleasant surprise for her. Luckily, again, there’s a local sex worker who knows how to apply ice, and then it's more road and painted lines. Road movies tend to work when you become invested in the characters involved. I have to say, I didn’t feel any connection at all. I’m getting tired of these narratives that simply present another troubled relationship set against a backdrop of abandonment, addiction, infidelity, or just plain dullness, and I'm afraid much of the drawn-out and excessive dialogue did little to hold my attention. It didn’t require a large budget; the production is adequate – but the story and both performances are just boring, boring, boring. Sorry.
