A lighthearted romantic comedy features beautiful scenery, though it also contains uncomfortable elements. Two affluent Americans experiencing difficulties in their marriage decide to take their teenage daughters on a trip to Rio de Janeiro hoping for a change of pace. The more open-minded husband (Joseph Bologna) quickly finds himself involved with someone unsuitable while indulging his desires, and the other husband (Michael Caine) makes an error when he connects with the other man’s daughter on the beach, where she reveals her feelings for him. This situation doesn't seem likely to resolve favorably. “Blame It on Rio,” released in 1984, provides some enjoyable and unusual entertainment thanks to its gorgeous settings. It’s similar to “10” from 1979, but ultimately isn’t as strong a film. While there's an important theme of forgiveness presented near the conclusion, I found it had too much explicit content for my liking. For example, Michelle Johnson was only five months away from turning 18 when filming occurred, yet she appears completely nude in one scene. The movie implies that Rio’s atmosphere encourages unrestrained desires. Demi Moore plays the other daughter (she was 20 during production), and Valerie Harper portrays Caine's wife. Valerie still appeared to be in excellent shape at age 44 while filming. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 40 minutes and was filmed on location in Rio de Janeiro. GRADE: C
