Wesley Snipes portrays "Blade," a half-human, half-vampire who has the job of safeguarding humanity from vampires, with “Whistler” (Kris Kristofferson) as his unusual companion. The vampire leadership eventually determines that they need to eliminate their adversary and assigns "Deacon Frost" (Stephen Dorff) to take him out. I’ve always liked Dorff; he's not a standout performer, but he possesses a certain screen presence—a sort of attractive rawness, you might say—and in this film, he provides a decent contrast to the meticulous man in black who is his target. The action sequences feel overly staged for my taste, with too much gymnastics that takes away from the story's dark atmosphere; it’s about vampires, not an exercise in rhythmic movement. Nevertheless, things progress at a brisk pace as "Frost" attempts to call upon the blood deity "La Magra" to gain the ultimate power to defeat our protagonist. The movie keeps moving forward quickly, with well-integrated effects and character development that contribute to an enjoyable, albeit familiar narrative—certainly the strongest of the subsequent films in the series.
