The second installment in this vampire hunter series mixes elements of action, superhero stories, and horror, a combination that I’m finding appealing. This time, Blade (Wesley Snipes; New Jack City, Chaos), Abraham Whistler (Planet of the Apes, Provinces of Night), and newcomer Scud (Norman Reedus; The Boondock Saints, Pandorum) join forces with the Blood Pack—which includes Dieter Reinhardt (Ron Perlman; Hellboy, Outlander), Nyssa Damaskinos (Hell Ride, Wrong Turn at Tahoe), Chupa (Matt Schulze; The Transporter, The Fast and the Furious), Asad (Danny-John Jules; Red Dwarf, Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels), Snowman (Donnie Yen; IP Man, Highlander: Endgame), Verlaine (Marit Kile; Doctors, Blue Murder), Priest (Tony Curran; The Midnight Meat Train, Underworld: Evolution), and Lighthammer (Daz Crawford; Hammer of the Gods, Game Over)—to defeat UberVamp Jared Nomak (a personal favorite, Luke Goss; Death Race 2, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Tekken) and his army of Reaper Strain Vampires. Following along? If not, you should just watch the movie! It's really quite good. The beginning is almost as impactful as the first one, and nearly everything else about it is an improvement. Plus, I’m a big fan of Luke Goss. All the characters are much better developed this time around; they actually interact with each other. Even though Wesley Snipes hasn’t always impressed me as an actor, his portrayal of Blade felt less contrived, which definitely helps, and was generally just better. [SPOILERS FOR BLADE, BLADE II AND TRINITY] An interesting thing to consider throughout the trilogy is that vampires fight each other—not just in the sense that Blade’s a half-vampire killing full vampires, although that happens too. In the first film, Frost kills the Elder vampires to become La Magra. Then, in this movie, The Blood Pack and Blade team up against a new, more dangerous type of vampire. And in the third one, Dracula goes around killing vampires seemingly for his own amusement. I haven’t read the comics much myself, so I don't know if that's always been part of the story or just something that developed organically. There were a few weak spots though. Some lines felt really silly, like "they took all of our weapons. Even your sword." Seriously? Even *that* sword? The one they named you after, which has killed more vampires than anything else on Earth, and the vampires stole it? That’s pretty bold! And there's this whole thing with Whistler being alive again; they started to explain how that happened, then kind of dropped it. A quick four-second flashback would have easily resolved it. Oh well. Despite those minor issues, I really like this movie a lot. 77% -Gimly
