The notion that Blackthorn presents—that Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid didn't die in 1908—is appealing. It imagines one of history’s most notorious criminals living longer than the record suggests, and it makes for a rather mournful film as we follow an aging and weathered Cassidy, now known as James Blackthorn, on another journey. He finds himself alongside a spirited Spaniard named Eduardo Apodaca, who initially attempts to rob him but then proposes to make amends by sharing proceeds from a previous heist. Their travels lead them into the path of those pursuing them, which rekindles something in Cassidy’s demeanor. However, things aren't quite what they appear, and recollections of Butch and Sundance at their peak—Nikolaj Costsr-Waldau is an inspired casting choice as young Cassidy due to his resemblance to Shepard—along with the spirited Etta Place, contribute to a complete story. The film moves deliberately and shows consideration for storytelling; it’s full of depth in its portrayal of the main character (Shepard delivers a remarkable performance, truly capturing the essence of the man). It does include occasional action sequences, moments of humor, displays of masculinity, and worthwhile romantic elements, but these all serve to amplify its underlying sadness. Moreover, it stands out as one of the most beautifully shot Westerns in recent times. Filmed largely on location in Bolivia, the landscapes—whether towering mountains or strikingly clear salt flats—are breathtaking, a stunning depiction of Earth’s beauty expertly brought to life by Anchia, making this an essential Blu-ray purchase for fans of Western films who appreciate location photography. Lucio Godoy's musical score is also perfectly suited to the film's emotional tone. There are a few familiar tropes, and Stephen Rea feels underutilized; some might find the plot straightforward. However, it’s a thoughtful film made with affection for the Western genre. It’s worth seeing for Sam Shepard's performance and the cinematography alone, but it also appeals to those who enjoy emotional depth in their Westerns. 8/10
