I believe the most recent Lee film I saw and appreciated was Malcolm X... but truthfully, I didn’t find myself particularly enjoying the movie itself; it was more about Denzel Washington's acting. It’s good to see him playing something different than his usual role as a clever police officer and truly committing himself to the project. I suppose it’s only right to acknowledge that it isn’t quite as dreadful as *Son of Sam*... though it does have a quality similar to those Nicolas Cage films you feel obligated to sit through, most of them anyway; he has managed a few decent ones. It seems Lee directed the actors to perform in an exaggerated style, even for minor roles. Every line feels forced, every part is over-the-top. There's nothing subtle or realistic about it, and that makes it difficult to get through. The end result is a potentially powerful biographical film that was transformed into a ridiculous spectacle.
