Steve Walker, played by Dean Jones, finds himself in charge of a rather dismal track team at Godolphin College. He’s lodged at "Blackbeard's Inn," where he meets the Daughters of The Buccaneers—who claim to be related to “Blackbeard” and his pirates. Their inn faces demolition to make way for a casino run by someone dishonest, so they organize an auction hoping to gather enough money to prevent it. Walker unexpectedly winds up with an old bedpan that holds a parchment containing a spell, which he reads aloud without thinking...and then the ghost of “Blackbeard” (Peter Ustinov) appears. He’s under a curse requiring him to perform an act of kindness before he can move on—a challenge has now been presented. This is an enjoyable fantasy adventure; Ustinov shines as the playful and unwilling ghost, clearly enjoying his time with the people and modern conveniences of 1960s America—particularly because only Walker can see him. It occasionally leans into slapstick comedy and isn’t particularly complex, so don't anticipate a significant mental workout; it is better to simply appreciate the performances and smile at the simple, but adequate, special effects.
