This pirate story is full of spectacle, featuring Robert Newton in a standout performance as Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Torin Thatcher portrays the governor of Jamaica, formerly Sir Henry Morgan, who’s supposedly reformed but may still be up to no good. Keith Andes, seemingly chosen for his appearance, seems skeptical about Morgan's change of heart and poses as a doctor to uncover evidence that he hasn't really gone straight, hoping to collect a prize in the process. The film largely exists to showcase Newton’s talents, drawing immediate parallels to his memorable role in "Treasure Island" from 1950. Linda Darnell adds some rather stiff elegance to the movie, with Irene Ryan contributing a performance reminiscent of Una O'Connor as the housekeeper. It mixes real historical events and made-up details; director Raoul Walsh doesn’t maintain complete control throughout—the film drags in places—but it remains an enjoyable experience packed with action, swordplay, and plenty of rum.
