This Bond film, attempting emotional depth, doesn’t quite succeed. There’s an excess of dialogue reminiscent of Marvel projects, which clashes with its attempts at realism, and honestly, none of the performers seem comfortable with that kind of sitcom-style writing—Pugh especially struggles with those moments. While some of the action sequences in the middle are above average for this series, anything involving Taskmasker is disappointing, and the ending falls flat. The villain portrayed by Winstone makes me long for earlier Bond films where even poorly constructed plots featuring actors like Lonsdale and Lee were at least somewhat entertaining. A significant problem stems from relying too heavily on characters discussing their shared history as a makeshift family; although Johansson and Pugh display good chemistry, and Weisz and Harbour do the best they can to convey regret, there isn’t enough quiet time for these moments to truly resonate. I understand what Shortland was trying to bring to one of these films, but ultimately very little works, even considering how self-contained this movie is compared to most. It's peculiar that after putting off giving Johansson her own film for so long, they made a movie where she often feels like an observer and a connective tissue linking the supporting characters’ family drama—so much so that they had to add an extra storyline about her guilt over killing Winstone’s daughter, seemingly to give her more substance. She functions as both the lead and the most unnecessary element within her own story.
