“Black Widow” appears to be part of a movement trying to revive the feel of 1940s film noir, something that’s gently emphasized by Michael Small’s fitting musical score. Earlier attempts included "The Postman Always Rings Twice" (1981), and then “Body Heat” (1981) with its overt – and later controversial – exploration of sexuality, but “Black Widow” is the one that gets closest to matching the exceptional standard of those older films. It's a captivating film, skillfully put together, showcasing some gorgeous scenery, particularly in Hawaii, which is truly stunning—including an impressive volcanic eruption at one point. The underwater photography is also beautiful and would probably be a travel agent’s ideal showcase.
