Van Damme and Lundgren’s pairing feels worn out after repeated viewings, especially given how awful this underwater movie is. Van Damme ("Wheeler") is trapped aboard a submarine where a disloyal CIA agent "Rhodes" (Al Sapienza) and his group are trying to kill him because he's been set up. He gets some assistance from novice operative "Cass" (Jasmine Waltz), and later, for a short time, from an old friend "Marco" (Lundgren), who also has grievances of his own. What follows is simply bad; that’s the only way to describe it. Submarines are essentially sealed metal containers that don't respond well - as Sir Sean Connery explained in "Hunt for Red October" (nearly three decades prior) - to gunfire. This one has to withstand a barrage of machine guns and explosions before the completely exposed control room becomes the setting for an ending that I was eager to see arrive. There isn’t anything at all worth remembering about this film; every performer is uninspired, and the story goes from absurd to ridiculous to "seriously?" Van Damme still possesses some charm, but it's diminishing quickly, and he can’t manage to keep things afloat – it’s just flimsy and unoriginal, and not a good use of almost three hours.
