The film earns a score of 73 out of 100. This Italian production from Mario Bava tells the story of a witch who lived in the 1600s, and was imprisoned within a tomb inside a coffin—a container with a window forcing her to gaze at a cross indefinitely. After two centuries pass, along with a shattered window and a damaged cross, plus some blood, she begins to awaken...and is understandably displeased. The black-and-white cinematography by Bava is stunning, the sets are impressive, the acting and dialogue are intentionally dramatic and theatrical, and Barbara Steele delivers an unforgettable performance; it’s a superb representation of Gothic horror as it existed then. -- DrNostromo.com
