During the 1880s, a man who used to work on ranches finds himself employed as a bounty hunter, having become skilled with firearms (played by Rory Calhoun). His former sweetheart moves on and marries a respectable sheriff (Terry Moore & James Best), but the bounty hunter now has a job: deliberately damage the town’s image by running a saloon and introducing gambling and prostitution. Other performers include Scott Brady, Lon Chaney Jr., Richard Arlen, Bruce Cabot and DeForest Kelley. “Black Spurs” (1965) is often overlooked because it was made by A.C. Lyles, who specialized in low-budget Westerns starring actors past their prime. Regardless of its television-like feel, Calhoun delivers a strong performance as the tough hero, and there’s plenty of action typical of the genre; the story itself, dealing with mature themes and resembling a daytime drama, is quite engaging. The female characters include Rusty Allen and Sandra Giles. It marked the final film appearance for Linda Darnell, who died at 41 in a house fire, and was released after her passing. Although it doesn’t have the polished look of popular Westerns from the 60s like “One-Eyed Jacks,” “Nevada Smith,” “Hombre” and “Bandolero,” I would prefer to watch this film over some that are considered classics, such as "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," “A Fistful of Dollars” and “For a Few Dollars More.” The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 21 minutes, and filming took place at Iverson Ranch, Ray Corrigan Ranch and Paramount Studios in California. GRADE: B
