A case of ovinaphobia has struck Wairarapa! Jonathan King’s Black Sheep is a delightfully odd horror comedy shot in New Zealand. The story centers on a simple idea: a farmer, immature and unstable, experiments with genetics, resulting in zombie sheep that enjoy eating people. If you manage to survive being bitten, you become part human, part sheep—and also have a taste for human flesh! It seems the entire population of this island is facing destruction unless three spirited young individuals can conquer significant challenges and rescue everyone. The special effects, handled by Weta, are certainly impressive, and Black Sheep delivers plenty of entertainment while eating popcorn. While many of the jokes aren’t particularly original, they work well because the humor is presented in a very obvious way. It's also enjoyable that there’s an element of playful wickedness throughout, and King demonstrates some understanding of the world through his sarcastic comments aimed at scientists and environmental activists. The cinematography by Richard Bluck is beautiful, showcasing the stunning scenery as a contrast to the sheep-related chaos, while Victoria Kelly's musical score is cheerfully excellent. This isn’t groundbreaking cinema, so viewers new to horror/comedy who anticipate something different will likely be let down. However, running for less than 90 minutes, King’s movie maintains its energy and never feels like it needs to search for fresh comedic material. It's a brief, impactful, humorous film that is definitely worth watching if you are in the right frame of mind. 7/10
