Boris Karloff acts as the presenter for this collection of three separate tales. The initial story, which is also the briefest, didn’t particularly grab me; it revolves around a nurse who steals a ring from a dead person, only to discover that the deceased isn't entirely done with her. The second segment involves a woman returning home and receiving unsettling phone calls predicting she won't survive until morning. Michèle Mercier delivers a convincing performance as the frightened "Rosy" in this particular story. Lastly, Karloff himself appears in a longer, fairly entertaining vampire narrative about a count who finds the corpse of a notorious bandit and brings it to a local farm. It’s after that, and with the arrival of the father figure “Gorca,” that he starts to understand danger has already been welcomed into their midst. The overall aesthetic resembles Hammer Productions' style; while some of the makeup and visual effects—particularly noticeable in the first story—haven’t aged well, generally the three stories are reasonably strong, conveying warnings about retribution for those who steal, deceive, or take lives. I doubt I’ll remember it long after viewing, but Bava demonstrated a knack for economical studio horror films, and the latter two segments do a commendable job of building suspense and dread. It was enjoyable overall.
