Three friends in their thirties return to a Maine island for a vacation, revisiting a place where they spent their childhoods building a fort. Sarah (Kate Bosworth) organizes the trip with the intention of bringing together Abby (Katie Aselton) and Lou (Lake Bell), who have drifted apart. Initially, the camping experience seems positive, but circumstances change, forcing them into a struggle for survival. "Black Rock" (2012) is a thriller set in a wilderness setting that blends elements of drama, adventure, and horror, drawing comparisons to films like “Deliverance” (1972), “The Edge” (1997), “Nightmare at Bittercreek” (1988), and “Backcountry” (2014). Although it doesn't have the same financial resources as the first two examples, it’s arguably just as effective as the latter pair. Stories like this explore what happens when people are isolated in nature and must tap into their basic instincts to endure, even if that means resorting to violence. This film feels authentic and is skillfully crafted, and it moves along at a good pace. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour and 20 minutes and was filmed near Milbridge, Maine. GRADE: B+
