It’s hard to watch something like this without wanting to lash out, no matter how well-made it is! A way of life for the Huron people—one where they lived alongside nature while clashing with the Iroquois and struggling to survive—is disrupted by a devastating force: Christianity. “Laforgue” (Lothaire Bluteau) is asked by his fellow Jesuits to journey into this isolated, gorgeous region and share his beliefs. To give credit where it's due, he’s incredibly persistent. It takes an enormous amount of effort – primarily traveling by canoe through some extremely harsh environments – as he makes his way with “Daniel” (Aden Young) and “Annuka” (Sandrine Holt) to the home of a group of people who are wary but willing to receive them. "Laforgue" isn't malicious, but he has a duty to perform, and their more straightforward spirituality—tied to things like the seasons, harvests, and weather—doesn’t stand up well against his structured conversion efforts, particularly once a church is constructed. Things quickly fall apart, and chief “Chomina” (August Schellenberg) finds himself needing to make difficult decisions to protect his people from this new, overwhelming form of faith. Bluteau does an okay job; I wouldn't say he’s outstanding—Schellenburg likely gets the awards for acting, but that’s not really the main point. It’s the powerful message it delivers that gives it some extra impact. Visually, it is stunning. The landscapes of Québec—the snow, the mountains, and the wide-open spaces—are beautifully filmed, giving you a sense of how untouched this land was before European expansion and their required religious beliefs. It's a story that forcefully argues that their society wasn’t flawed, so why did we feel compelled to change it?
