A man (Stefan Merki) opts to take the tram instead of struggling with his motorcycle. While riding, he observes a young Black boy (Paul Outlaw) inquire if an elderly woman’s (Senta Moira) empty seat is available; she pointedly disregards him but he sits down regardless. What follows involves her loudly complaining to everyone in the carriage, which really highlights how prejudiced and behind the times she is. At first, other riders simply acknowledge and smile, but they eventually become bored and diverted by another passenger with loud headphones—though these are not nearly as objectionable. Then the ticket inspector arrives, and things unfold in a way that suggests there's a certain pleasure to be found in retribution, though it’s somewhat muted. It serves as a mild criticism of indifference and avoiding conflict, but also a sharper critique of deeply held biases that reveal more about the person expressing them than anyone they are directed at; ultimately, I did find the resolution quite gratifying and it brought a smile to my face.
