I approached seeing this film with some reservations. My worry was that it would be overloaded with political messaging and commentary, particularly given how widely celebrated it is currently within certain groups. Thankfully, the amount of that sort of thing turned out to be less than I anticipated. Despite my concerns, I did find the movie entertaining. It’s not a masterpiece, far from living up to all the excitement surrounding it, but it's perfectly acceptable. Essentially, it follows the familiar formula of a big-budget superhero film. This means a fairly unremarkable plot is bolstered by plenty of action sequences and impressive visuals. The narrative itself is a standard revenge story with elements related to Black empowerment—nothing particularly remarkable, but it serves its purpose as a framework for the action and special effects, which are really what carry the movie. As expected, there’s some silliness and plot inconsistencies throughout; like Shuri stating that Vibranium (a ridiculous name, regardless) is unstable at high speeds, yet they construct flying vehicles and other fast-moving objects from it without issue. The main characters were somewhat underwhelming. I didn't find the central hero to be particularly engaging. Killmonger, the antagonist, was also disappointing; he seemed like a stereotypical unintelligent criminal, and his behavior largely reflected that perception. It’s frustrating they couldn’t cast someone who appeared less… well, foolish! My favorite character ended up being Klaue, who was delightfully eccentric and cool. The female warriors, both capable and intelligent, were also enjoyable, as was Shuri. The special effects are where the film truly excels. I thought the special effects were generally good. The designs of the various gadgets and ships were well done. The rampaging rhinos during the final battle genuinely made me chuckle; it shouldn’t have surprised me. I appreciated all the sonic effects as well. It's safe to say that without successful special effects, this movie would have been largely forgettable. Overall, *Black Panther* is a fairly enjoyable action and special effects showcase. That’s all it is, and that’s all it isn’t. There's some social messaging mixed in, but not as much as I worried about; the story is unremarkable, there's plenty of action, and lots of impressive special effects.
