The impressive visuals from Jack Cardiff immediately create an ideal atmosphere for this exceptionally well-directed narrative centered on "Sister Clodagh" (Deborah Kerr), who is sent to a secluded area of northern India to build a school and hospital within an old, drafty palace. Along with a distinctive group of nuns—Flora Robson, Jenny Laird, Judith Furse, and Kathleen Byron—they face both harsh conditions and personal struggles as they attempt to establish their mission; these efforts are complicated by the arrival of the mysterious David Farrar. He seems to elicit both positive and negative reactions from Kerr and the excellent Kathleen Byron, portraying "Sister Ruth," who hovers precariously between reason and a kind of frightening hopelessness. The film explores numerous themes related to post-colonial India, including poverty, hunger, lack of education, and the role of Christianity—among those who embrace it and those who oppose it—and challenges each woman’s beliefs in powerful ways. Pay attention to May Hallatt's noteworthy performance as the somewhat unstable caretaker known as "Auntie," who offers both harshness and insightful advice seemingly at random.
