Black Christmas manages to be both a slasher film and a genuinely well-made movie because the director clearly aimed high. Every individual in the story has a reason for being there, and it goes beyond just moving things forward. They come across as real people with distinct personalities and reasons for their actions. Barb isn’t simply a cliché of a drunk and unpleasant person; her behavior stems from jealousy and probably unresolved issues from when she was younger. At minimum, the other characters have that same level of depth. The one character whose background remains unclear is Billy, and honestly, it's better that way. Understanding him wouldn't serve the story, and his mystery only amplifies the horror. This film absolutely belongs on any horror enthusiast’s list of Christmas movies to watch.
