This new version of Black Christmas simply isn't good. It seems to aim for a horror film with something important to say, but loses sight of the fundamentals—being frightening or even engaging. There's no sense of real suspense, and what happens next feels obvious from early on. The movie is so focused on delivering its message that it neglects essential elements like building tension, creating mystery, or simply telling a decent story. What results isn’t a disturbing, gradually unfolding slasher; instead, it’s a chaotic, hurried, and strangely empty film that seems unsure of its purpose. The direction feels very ordinary, as if the goal was just to move through the scenes rapidly. The visuals are unremarkable too—plain and dull, reminiscent of an inexpensive television program. The performances vary considerably; while some cast members try their best, the script is so flawed that even strong acting can’t redeem it. The lines feel stilted and unnatural, which makes dramatic instances come across as corny rather than impactful. Furthermore, the film's rhythm is all over the place. Certain scenes linger for too long, while others race through significant moments as if they are behind schedule. The writing contains a lot of pointless material, and even straightforward aspects don’t quite add up. The music is entirely unremarkable. The sound effects also fail to make much of an impression, which is a letdown in a horror film. Ultimately, it's just an unsuccessful effort at both horror and commentary on social issues, falling short with both objectives.
