Following the death of a singer who was being blackmailed, "Kirk Bennett" (played by John Phillips) is wrongly found guilty of her killing. His wife, June Vincent ("Catherine"), seeks assistance from "Blair," portrayed by Dan Duryea, an ex-husband of the deceased woman and a man accustomed to spending time in bars. Posing as a pianist and singer, they begin looking into the situation, which leads them into an intricate series of maneuvers with "Marko" (Peter Lorre), the nightclub owner and small-time criminal who is portrayed exceptionally well. Duryea delivers a strong performance, and director Roy William Neill maintains a steady pace, guiding this skillfully put-together crime noir that occasionally feels slow but features several surprising developments and moments to maintain suspense.
